Challenging Destiny #14
An excellently produced collection of Science Fiction and Artwork edited by
David M. Switzer. Rhett makes his cover debut:
At long last, the gap between science fiction and super market coupon
flyers has been bridged.
Indeed my very favourite story in this edition is BOBBY'S FIRST ABC'S by
E.L. Chen. An interesting take on sci-fi. This highly amusing tale takes
the reader back to the days of Alphabites and Sesame Street, with the
Alphabix box.
The interview with Alison Sinclair, author of the novel, THRONE PRICE, is
another very good read.
NOT POPPY, NOR MANDRAGORA by K.G. McAbee is a tale from the classic Dungeons
and Dragons mould, but with a satisfying twist at the end.
Special mention has to be made of the artwork, which is outstanding. The
editor has compiled A SURVEY OF SF & FANTASY ART (Part 1 of 2) showcasing
some of the talent around today. For me, the most outstanding piece was
Jeff Remmer's RESPONSE, an erotic sci-fi figure captured in the kind of
thoughtful attitude previously displayed in old masterpieces. The light and
shade created on this black and white illustration is superb.
